The MAYDAY Chaos Cup is a first-of-its-kind, all-inclusive fishing competition!

Hosted by MAYDAY KZN ambassadors, Chaos Fishing, and the legendary Salmon Bay Ski Boat Club in Ballito, Durban, the event will run for one day only (best conditions) within a window period from 21 March to 23 March 2025.

With all the makings of a serious fishing competition, we decided to add some dynamic angles to put a new spin on things and investigate how inclusive a fishing competition can actually be.

The MAYDAY Chaos Cup will be open to “anything that floats” — meaning multiple crafts, ranging from boats to kayaks, are able to partake.

To make sure everyone goes home a winner, prizes are also dynamic, ranging from biggest fish to most interesting species.

Emphasis will also be placed on sustainable fishing practices and catch and release, with the best example thereof also going home with a smile on their dial!

Prizes:

A Main Prize to the value of R20K is growing with each entry, and generous partners including Sealand Gear, Jack Black Beer, NAUTI Stainless Steel, MHFishing, and TOIT Fishing, Braai Heroes, Basil Manning, Ballito Ski Boat Club have already hopped on board as prize sponsors. Cost:

R1000 per person. Entry includes a MAYDAY lure and unique MAYDAY CHAOS CUP event t-shirt.

The competition will be open to both club and non-club members, but limited to 20 boats/jet skis. We’ve decided to make it interesting and not cap kayak entries. Some categories are open exclusively to different vessel types, while others accommodate all involved — catering for focused specialists and “calling all fish” enthusiasts alike.

  • Mayday Biggest Fish Champion

    The main prize – To the value of  R20,000 for the biggest fish caught by weight.

  • SEALAND CATCH & RELEASE CHAMPION

    Biggest game fish released – with footage to prove.

  • Chaos Most Game Fish Released on Mayday Lures

    Catch and release as many as you can on Mayday lures. Footage needed to prove the place of the winner.

  • @Durbanrecrimercial Best Launch Filmed

    Inspired by @durbanrecrimercial, best launch or retrieve caught on camera wins. Filmed by anyone, footage submitted 1 hour before prize giving.

  • #1 Book your entry

    Purchase your entry ticket via our event page on Quicket. One ticket per person. Don't forget to share your vessel name in checkout – we've got a max capacity of 20 powered vessels on the day. Uncapped kayaks.

  • #2 Comp briefing 20th March

    The competition briefing will take place at the Ballito Ski Boat Club on Thursday, 20th March, starting at 17:30. Pull in to meet the #MaydayMob, collect your Mayday Lure and exclusive competition shirt, chat through the rules and suss out your competition.

  • #3 Launch zones and times

    • All motor vessels to launch at Ballito Ski Boat club (max 20 vessels).
    • All Kayaks to launch at either Salt rock, Ballito or Westbrook (uncapped entries).
    • Launch starts strictly at first light/6:00.

  • #4 Weigh in

    Weigh in will be on the day of the competition at 16:00. Vessel needs to be on the beach by 16:00 to qualify. Prize giving starts shortly after weigh in so judges can deliberate on judged prizes.
